Uttarkashi is a sacred and historically important district of Uttarakhand, often called the “Kashi of the North” due to its deep spiritual significance. The region has been associated with Hindu traditions since ancient times and is closely connected with the Garhwal Kingdom, which was founded by King Kanak Pal of the Panwar dynasty in the early medieval period. For centuries, Uttarkashi remained an important religious and cultural center of Garhwal.

The presence of the holy Bhagirathi River, considered the true source stream of the Ganga, made Uttarkashi a major destination for saints, sages, and pilgrims. The famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple of Uttarkashi, dedicated to Lord Shiva, reflects its strong link with Vedic and Shaivite traditions. The town also lies on the sacred route to the Gangotri Dham, one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites.

During the British period, Uttarkashi became part of British Garhwal after the Anglo-Gorkha War (1814–1816). After independence, it remained a key district of Uttar Pradesh until Uttarakhand was formed in 2000.

Today, Uttarkashi is known for its spiritual heritage, adventure tourism, and its role as a gateway to the sources of the Ganga.
